image of Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina'

The Honeysuckle or Woodbine, is a native plant which twines its way through hedges and trees. This one is the late Dutch variety Lonicera periclymenum 'Serotina' which has red and white flowers and bronze-tinted leaves. The beautiful scent is accompanied by the constant hum of bees which are feeding on the nectar
It is not as vigorous as some of the Honeysuckles so requires little pruning, but if necessary this is best carried out after flowering to tidy up straggly growth. The main stems can be reduced by a third to encourage new growth.

Play this little video for a bit of 1960s nostalgia. As with most US productions the Robin is not the British species Erithacus rubecula, but the American one Turdus migratorius. The tune was arranged by Percy Grainger from the British folk-dance tune "Country Gardens" and this version by the American Jimmie Rodgers which explains the inclusion of species not found in England.
