Developments in My Garden - Crescent Garden
Page 1 Page 2 Lower Garden Middle Garden The Pond Snow Garden Garden Sculptures vegetable plot plant list
This is a view over the parterre garden in September 2006 after the box edging and central lavender were planted. The remnants of the christmas tree plantation which were retained as a windbreak, are visible in the background, as is the work starting on the crescent garden. The underlying picture shows the view before the start.
The topsoil was removed and the sub-soil was re-profiled to form a roughly circular level area in the middle and the excess material was moved upwards to make a terrace. It slopes down on each side and is supported by a dry-stone retaining wall in a crescent shape. The whitish gravel is the top layer of a field drain which is linked to the back-fill of the wall to prevent water that could weaken it, from gathering. The underlying picture shows the wall in construction.
After the re-profiling, the topsoil was replaced.
In July 2008 the grass has re-grown and the planting is starting to establish. Holding your mouse over the picture should download a view from the opposite direction.
A bed of shrubs sits around the edge of the terrace above the wall and a penninsular herbaceous bed sits halfway around the front of the central grassed area.
