The common name Snakes-head Fritillary, is an obvious choice to describe the nodding fowers of Fritillaria meleagris with their unique chequered pattern on the petals. They are quite happy in a woodland garden or in a meadow, where they will self-seed. A white-flowered variant will occasionally pop up as well. The bulbs are planted in the autumn, but beware, mice and squirrels love them so if they fail to appear the following spring this is the most likely reason.
